The business this week is tragedy. To understand what a tragedy we need to dig deeper. Tragedy is not just a sad story, tragedy is about getting an emotional response from your audience.
Tragedy has existed since before two hundred B.C. and has been the favorite type of works for historians to look at. If a tragedy is successful it releases some emotions from the audience. The word of the week is catharsis, which is the build up and release of emotions. Aristotle believed that in order for a work to be considered tragedy, it must contain catharsis.
This week we also focused on illustrating, authorizing, and extending. Illustrating is all about making a point using things that were given in the text. It usually involves using rhetorical devices to help make a point. Like how an irregular rhyme scheme would make the poem seem more irregular. Authorizing is using words and quotes directly from the work to show a point. For example if a poem says "the radiated a warm feeling" you could show that the mood of that poem is generally warm and happy. Extending is adding ideas from your own brain. You connect and explain how the things in the work support your claim. Using these three tools are a major part of creating an essay. These tools are the main things that scholars use to analyze literature and other art forms.
