This week in AP Lit, the focus was on being selective in interpretations. I have never really considered myself a very creative or artistic person, but this week I learned a new way to look at artwork. In the past I have been to art museums and I do not think I was every able to fully understand how to look at artwork. I spent this week training my brain to try and look past things on the surface level of artwork. I plan to also apply this new way of looking at paintings to other artwork. I found, with the help of Christina's world (left), that art can be interpreted in emotional ways and also in literal ways. I sing in the choir so I plan to not only apply this method to literature, but also choral pieces.
This week the poem we focused on was I felt a Funeral, in my Brain by Emily Dickinson. This poem helped me to try and again, look past the first layer of artwork. I looked past the surface of a literal funeral and found that there were some emotional issues and depression going on underneath the words. While I could not really relate the poem to my life, it was a good poem to analyze because it was not very difficult to find the second layer.
All together this week was about looking deeper into all artwork, using poetry and paintings to guide my brain to a new type of thinking. This week has had me thinking in ways that I have not ever had to do and that is exciting in a way. It can also be quite difficult to rewire my brain to look for new ideas when I have seen paintings and literature my entire life.
