This week in AP Lit we started reading Oedipus Rex. In order to analyze this book we have spent a lot of time defining the genre, tragedy. We have looked at a lot of materials including Wikipedia articles and ted talks to help us understand tragedy. Before we started this unit my understanding of tragedy was that it was the opposite of comedy. A tragedy is a piece of literature in which there are not good things or that good things get destroyed. After learning about tragedy this week I have learned that is not entirely accurate. Tragedy is about getting a response from the audience.
When a tragedy is well written, in gets a response from an audience.
The story of Oedipus is the tragedy we have chosen to read in class. So far the main tragic part of it is Oedipus' fall from being on top. He is trying so hard to avoid a prophecy and that is what causes the tragedy to come true.
We have learned that tragedy is usually born when someone tries to change their place in society and that is what is Oedipus' downfall.
