The tragedy of Antigone begins with her proposal to bury her brother. The very first part of the story divides Antigone and Ismene. Ismene says "Do you dare despite Kreon?" challenging Antigone's beliefs and separating Antigone from the rest of the characters in the novel. In the story, the main tragedy is that Antigone is separated from the rest of the world because of her very strong beliefs. In the end, the iron will of Kreon and of Antigone provide the tragic elements we find in this story.
When Antigone decides to bury her brother, she is directly defying the king of Thebes, Kreon. Antigone is so stuck and unwilling to believe she may be wrong, that she is willing to die for the right to bury her brother.
The tragedy with Kreon is also that he is unmoving. He believes that if he changes his stance, he will be a poor king. He wants to keep his place in the world, as king, and the decisions that he makes are made with the goal of keeping him as king. That is where the tragedy occurs. Kreon is trying so hard to stay king, and not just lead his people. He is more concerned with his own status, than the status of his people. This begins his downfall and the downfall of all of the people in his life. It is easy to relate to him even though he is a king because everybody wants to find a place where they believe they fit in to society.
The tragedy in Antigone is a tragedy of sticking to your guns. The characters that cannot change and adapt are the characters
