Starting another group activity in AP Literature always is exciting. This week we focused on trying to become masters on our two themes of literature. Our themes we chose were theme, and symbolism. Working with a group is helpful to interpret these themes.
Reading about theme has helped me to understand the difference between theme and moral. The moral of a story is usually a short platitude that most people already consider to be true like "Be considerate." The moral of a story does not usually involving reading into a story any deeper. The theme can usually be summed up in a sentence, but could also take an entire essay. The theme of a story exists when the author tries to record life or introduce a unifying theory about life. The theme of a story is sort of a central insight into life. When you understand the theme of a story you can go back and reread to find new meaning in all of the symbols found in the literature. Theme also helps define the difference between commercial fiction and literary fiction.
This week the poem we analyzed was "Bright Star". This poem was different than the last weeks because it used some different literary tactics. The piece makes great use of apostrophe to talk to the star. It brings the star closer to the speaker and allows the poem to have a different feeling.
